Switzerland - 2018

Monday, September 17, 2018.

The Switzerland part of our trip was planned by Alpenwild. We got a pretty good description of how to get where and the trip included two tickets for each of us. One is a round trip ticket that we used to go from Basel to Lauterbrunnen and for our final trip from Grindelwald to Zurich. The other is a half price ticket that we used for the shorter train rides and gondola's during the next few days.

We got to the train station in Basel and checked out the layouts. Geneviv and Cerita arrived in time for us to try to catch a half hour earlier train, but when we went to the station, that train was actually leaving from a different track and we just missed it. The ride from Basel to Lauterbrunnen took about 2.5 hrs.

We dropped off our luggage at Hotel Silberhorn then began a walk up the Lauterbrunnen Valley past the Staubbach Waterfalls. We were heading to find the Trummelbach Water Falls, but made a wrong turn so it was a longer route we were taking. Marilou was traveling a little slower than us, and when we found out we had gone past the falls on the wrong side of the stream, I headed back to Marilou while Geneviv and Cerita continued to the falls. Turns out we were closer to the falls than I thought.

The next morning we took the Jungfrau railway to the Alpine crossroads of Kleine Scheidegg. From there, we caught a cog-wheel train that climbed into a tunnel through the Eiger on an ascent to the Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe. The Alpenwild plan was followed pretty much as Tari laid it out. See the plan:

Jungfraujoch - September 18, 2018

On our way back Geneviv, Cerita and I got off at the Eigergletscher station and hiked to Kleine Scheidegg station, Marilou stayed on the train to that station and shopped/waited for us.

After eating some ice cream, we took the train to Grindelwald where our luggage had been transferred for us. We stayed at the Hotel Gletschergarten. It was walking distance from the station, but a couple of us wanted to take a taxi to get there quicker. They didn't want to use the public bathrooms at the stations. I used the one on the train and it was clean.

Wednesday, September 19, 2018.

After breakfast we found our way to the gondola lift which we took up to First. Cerita picked the zip line and the scooter to get back. Geneviv choose the zip line, but not the scooter. Marilou and myself planned for the gondola both ways.

When we got off the gondola at First we walked to the cliff overhand, then to the alpine lake of Bachalpsee (elevation 7,431 ft) with a backdrop of the snowcapped peaks and glaciers of the Jungfrau region. We spent an hour or so near the lake, then returned to First and descended back to Grindelwald. Spent another evening in Grindelwald at the Hotel Gletschergarten.

Thursday, September 20, 2018.

Cerita and I made the early morning walk through Grindelwald to Grunt where we caught a gondola lift to Mannlichen. We then hiked to Kleine Scheidegg. We then took the train back to Grindelwald.

We then met Geneviv and Marilou and packed up for our trip to Zurich. Morning in Grindelwald and afternoon train to Zurich. The Hotel Gletschergarten owner gave us a lift back to the train station and we started our 3 hour ride to the Zurich Airport. The Hotel Radisson Blu is located in the airport so we were set for our parting.

We ate our dinner in the mall and spent the rest of our Swiss Francs on chocolate and such.
